What does National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 say?

and not just by reading

".....with the quickly changing employment landscape and global ecosystem, it is becoming increasingly critical that children not only learn, but more importantly learn how to learn. Education thus, must move towards less content, and more towards learning about how to think critically and solve problems, how to be creative and multidisciplinary, and how to innovate, adapt, and absorb new material in novel and changing fields. Pedagogy must evolve to make education more experiential, holistic, integrated, inquiry-driven, discovery-oriented, learner-centered, discussion-based, flexible, and, of course, enjoyable " National Education Policy 2020 (Pg 4, para 4)

Are schools ready for experiential learning?

  • Despite recognizing the value of hands-on learning, schools succumb to external pressure for scores and grades.
  • Limited access to alternate learning tools hindering hands-on learning culture.
  • Schools require additional resources for essential infrastructure to support hands-on learning.

Experiential learning allows students to understand concepts by doing, observing, experimenting and reflecting. It helps connect classroom knowledge with real-world situations while developing practical skills, curiosity, problem-solving and critical thinking.

A STEM Lab provides a structured environment where students can explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics through practical activities. It helps students move beyond theoretical learning and apply concepts through experiments, models and projects.

A Composite Skill Lab gives students opportunities to develop collaboration, communication, leadership, creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving. Practical projects and collaborative activities help students develop skills that extend beyond textbook learning.

When students build models, conduct experiments and solve practical problems, they can connect concepts with observable outcomes. Hands-on learning helps make abstract ideas more meaningful by giving students opportunities to apply what they learn.

Robotics and AI introduce students to emerging technologies while developing logical thinking, engineering skills, problem-solving and digital skills. CognoSpace includes Robotics & Engineering and AI as part of its technology and skill-development curriculum.

Design Thinking helps students approach problems systematically by understanding a problem, developing ideas, creating prototypes, testing solutions and reflecting on outcomes. The CognoSpace Design Thinking module develops empathy, collaboration, prototyping, critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork and leadership.

Schools can supplement classroom teaching with experiential learning labs, STEM activities, Robotics projects, AI activities, experiments, technology tools and project-based learning. These approaches give students opportunities to explore concepts through practical experiences.
